Piers Island queries

Ask an Islander

This page is a work in progress.  We're going to ask our residents what they think is important for people thinking of buying on Piers to know.  This will be a sort of FAQ page to help potential purchasers, new owners, old owners, realtors or just the curious about Piers.  We've also provided a question button if you don't see what you are looking for.
Ask an Islander
Q - What taxes are payable on Piers Island?
A - There is a yearly Province of BC tax due in July of each year.  The Piers Island Improvement (PIID) taxes are due August 31st of each year.  In addition, a water bill is each late October for the 12 months previous of water use.   Please contact [email protected] to make sure the appropriate PIID costs are included in your closing documents if purchasing a Piers Island property.

Q - Is there garbage service on Piers Island?
A - No.  If you have moorage at a marina there are usually garbage and recycling facilities available.  There is an Island Return It in Sidney for recycling items and the CRD Hartland Road dump to take household garbage and recycling.  Peninsula Landscape Supplies (across the road from Island Return It) offers household garbage taken by the bag for a fee.  $8.50 large bag, $6.25 for a small bag (2021)

Q - Can I rent my cottage/house on Piers?
A - Short term rentals are prohibited on Piers Island.  Rentals must be for at least 30 days and two families cannot reside on the property for more than 30 days.  The Land Use Bylaw allows for Guest Cottages, but they cannot be rented for less than 30 days, nor more if a person resides in the main residence.  Refer to Bylaw 373
