Be Prepared

During a major emergency event:
  • The available fire department, first responder and emergency program team members’ initial priorities will be to save lives, and assess and triage critical infrastructure.
  • Property owners need to be able to provide for the basic needs for the household and guests.
After the initial response:
  • As a community, we may be on our own for a long period of time.
  • It is expected that community will work together to manage and utilize on island resources until outside support is available.
  • The more self-sufficient every property is the better able the community is to manage during this time.
Being Prepared means:
  • Doing what you can to mitigate risks on your property and with your equipment (firesmart, maintenance, etc.)
  • Strategy and plan for managing in severe weather conditions, power outages and other emergency situations
  • Having a Grab and Go Bag ready that is easy to take with you, in case you need to leave right away with basic supplies for 72 hours.
  • Having an Emergency Home Kit  with supplies that support your household for 2 weeks while sheltering in place.
