Piers Island Association - PIA
|
The Piers Island Association was formed to bring the community together on this developing little island back in 1959. Initially Piers Island lots were sold on the basis that you could row across from Vancouver Island and in fact many did! Marketed as recreational properties, water was from a dugout reservoir and there was no telephone service except for one phone at the government dock. Children hid to eavesdrop on phone calls from the one island phone.
Events were planned to bring the community together a few times during the busy summer months. A dance under the full moon, an annual picnic with ribbons for all and a fishing derby. The fishing derby was discontinued when the fish population was suffering, however the dance, picnic, races and ribbons continue to this day. The Directors of the PIA are elected for a 2-year term and are all volunteers. |
The PIA today...
PIA Directors head up projects on the island for the PIA organized social events and the stewardship of the PIA owned lands. Invasive species and climate change have resulted in further efforts being required on the part of owner/volunteers to limit the amount of gorse and broom on the island and assist in the removal of forest debris that is a fire hazard.
