Library - Piers Island Reading Room
The Piers Island Library is a part of the Southern Gulf Islands Community Libraries, which includes Pender, Mayne, Galiano and Saturna. We receive annual funding which allows us to maintain a good supply of current books and a computer for the use of our community. Your Piers Island Library membership also gives you access to e-books and free entry to the The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
Our small library is housed in the Firehall / Community Hall building and is accessible as follows:
Mondays 10 am to 5 pm
Tuesdays 9 am to 5 pm
Wednesdays 9 am to 5 pm
Thursdays 10 am to 3 pm
Fridays 9 am to 5 pm
Saturdays 9 am to 5 pm. Afternoon social time 2 - 4 pm with homebaked treats
Sundays 1 to 5 pm
Please note that the library space is used by community groups for meetings at different times. We appreciate your consideration during these events.
Children / Youth:
We have added to our children's section and will continue to do so with the increase in our youth library patrons. The younger readers have their own book to fill in the details of their borrowing at the library to help familiarize them with normal library practice. Children 12 and under are welcome to use the library accompanied by an adult.
Pauline has been running the popular Storywalks during the summer and some school break periods, as well as fun craft workshops for all ages.
General:
In the main adult section, we have CBC Reads winners, Giller Prize winners, Governor General's Award winners, a First Nations collection and a substantial Piers Island authors collection. A good percentage of our fiction titles are mystery novels and we try to keep the more popular titles current. The non-fiction collection comprises local nature reference and local history books, biography/memoirs and an increasingly popular cookbook section.
We are often offered book donations that we are unable to accept. Instead we ask that you consider taking them to local thrift shops.
Piers Island Talks:
Our residents or those with a connection to our island have given well received talks to enthusiastic audiences. Topics have ranged far and wide, from an oral history of Piers Island, the recounting of a sailing voyage in the Magellan Strait, CERN and the Higgs Boson, medical assistance in dying, biochar systems, the opioid crisis, niche careers in the film industry, the life of Herwig Schopper and so on....if you have a story that you would like to share, we would love to hear from you.
We always welcome feedback and direction...feel free to contact your librarians Mari, Deborah and Barb at [email protected].
Happy Reading!
