Easy fire safety tip - keep your doors closed!  A closed door slows the spread of fire.

OUTDOOR BURNING IS NOW PROHIBITED

The Fire Rating has now moved to high.  Outdoor fires of any size are now prohibited.  Propane BB's and fire pits are still allowed.
Should the rating move to EXTREME outdoor spark producing activities will be banned as well.  Please keep your eye on the local posted fire danger rating signs on island as the website may not be up to date. If in doubt, contact [email protected]

BURN Permits are required effective April 15th

Piers Island Bylaw 71 includes the following regarding burning on Piers Island:
- No person shall light, ignite or maintain any fire or permit in the open air without first obtaining a permit from the Fire Chief or his designate.
- Permits are required from April 15th to October 16th but these dates may change by order of the Fire Chief if conditions warrant
- A permit can be withheld or cancelled if the Fire Chief or his designate feel there is a potential hazard to persons or property
- Burning of any type of combustible material greater than 2 cubic meters in size ( eg. A pile 6 feet x 3 feet x 3 feet) REQUIRES a permit year round. (N. Saanich uses 3x3x3)
- Regardless of the requirement to obtain a permit, a competent adult must supervise any burning and ensure that any equipment necessary for fire control is available. (charged hose & shovel or rake)

When and if permits are issued you must adhere to all additional restrictions/requirements as per the Permit and you MUST still call for an Inspection first.
Conditions can change rapidly, so burning may not always be permissible.
Contacts for Inspection for Permits:
Garth Irvine - 778-677-8668
Burke Stancill - 250-857-1792
Gerry Kristianson - 250-656-5829

A reminder that the burning of plastics or household waste is prohibited by Provincial Law. For full details - CLICK

PIID jurisdiction extends to 150 metres into sea from the high water mark.

Fire Practices  - Saturdays 4-6 pm

The siren will sound on most Saturdays at 4 pm.  A siren sounding at other times is a call to Firefighters and First Responders to an incident.

Fire Chief Burke Stancill
Welcomes anyone interested in participating in any aspect of the fire department services.   We are a 100% volunteer department and engage only in defensive firefighting meaning that we are not trained or equipped to enter involved structures.

FIRE PREVENTION

The #1 goal of any fire department is to prevent the fire from ever happening!

Volunteers in the community are working on Fire Prevention initiatives to allow our volunteer fire fighters time on the equipment and strategies should a fire occur.  We are an interface fire area, so working with homeowners to Fire Smart their properties helps us all.

Piers Island has received FireSmart Community/Neighbourhood Recognition since 2016.

FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT

Our best assets are our volunteers and Piers Island has wonderful community spirit. Those not inclined or suited to front line fire fighting or training can assist with managing the fire hall equipment, building and grounds.

We currently have 20 volunteer fire fighters (Seasonal & Full Time residents) and 8 First Responders in the department.  There is a further support team who assist in the upkeep of buildings & equipment.  We are strictly an Exterior Attack Only fire department.
Volunteer Firefighters and First Responders put in over 800 hours of practice & training time each year and are on call 24 hours a day when on island.
